Hi Marie,

First off I can’t tell you how glad I am to have you here. Her Mad Hatter has now become one of my absolute favorite books of all time! I loved everything about it the mad hatter, Scottish brogues, meddling fairy godmothers, bad boys, wonderland, and did I mention THE MAD HATTER? Ok enough of my fangirling and on to what I would really like to know.

Can I have the Mad Hatter?

Well... I don't know how Alice would feel about that. ;) Besides, if he belongs to anyone other than Alice, I'm pretty sure he's mine. :D

Just Kidding(:

Real Questions:

What made you decide to start writing fairytale based stories?

Short answer, I love them. I cut my teeth on Beauty and Beast, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid... But I was always desperate to know what happened afterwards. Why was the Hatter so crazy? What happened to all those villains? Did they ever get redeemed? I also adore romances and wanted to give those forgotten, often misrepresented (in my mind) villains a chance to explain themselves and maybe find redemption, even true love.

This book was written very well and the wonderland you have created was simply a dream come true. So I have to know was Alice in Wonderland one of your favorite books like it was our heroine Alice’s?

Thank you! :) You know, no. LOL... of all the books I've written I knew Hatter would be hardest to target. I kept picturing that bulbous nosed caricature of the Disney cartoons and wondering how I could ever make him desirable to not only his heroine, but the readers as well. I knew the Hatter had to be crazy, his name implies that after all. It was incredibly difficult for me to get into that strange head and try to think the way he would. Halfway through I wasn't even sure I had him right. He stated out dark and brooding, with very little ability to think beyond his madness. Then it dawned on me when I reread Alice in Wonderland, he really wasn't dark... he was misunderstood. Crazy, but not his fault. Poe, Frost, Lawrence... they are some of my favorite poets and one day while reading the Raven, it dawned on me... that's who he was. Fascinated by the depth of the human mind, desperate to remember what made him human, even while he spiraled deeper into insanity. Toward the end, I didn't want to let him go. But as for Wonderland being my favorite book, no...lol.

What do you like to do in your down time?

I love to walk, go to the beach, garden, hang out with my family. I'm a pretty normal (okay, boring) person. It's only between the pages of a book that you get to see how my mind really works!

Did any of your characters give you a difficult time while writing this book?

My boys. I always have a hard time getting into the mind of my hero. Maybe because I'm just such a girl! Half the time I have to ask my husband, would a man do this? LOL... he's such an inspiration for me. I was the Prom Queen in high school and fell in love with the Goth, if I ever find some time... I'll probably write a book about that strange attraction. LOL... many of my men are based on several different facets of my husband, without him I'm not sure I could write a hero at all.

Can you relate to any of the characters? Do they share any of your traits?

Alice. She's me, sort of. I always wanted to open a beachfront Cupcakery in downtown Honolulu, she's adventurous, but tough. Sweet, soulful, and full of life. And she had cancer, me again. She was my way of letting go a dark period in my life. Alice was cathartic for me to write about... probably one of my favorite heroine's. :)

The fairy godmother played a big role in the book and had a very big personality. Was she inspired by any real life person(s).

LOL... so funny you should ask that question. She's my Mother in Law through and through. I'm very fortunate to have such a great relationship with her and I always thought her personality was bigger than life, she flits and buzzes around constantly. A chatty Kathy I like to call her. Danika is my mother-in-law.

Hot Chocolate or Coffee

Oh... hot chocolate with a nice dollap of cream on a cold night. Absolutely!

Did you like fairytales growing up and if so did you have a favorite?

Well fairytales as I knew them were often very dark and didn't always end happily. Though if I had to say I had a favorite, it would have definitely been The Little Mermaid. Prince Eric was so magical to me, he was my first crush and stayed with me forever. The Grimm version of the book didn't end so happily, so I choose to pretend the Disney version is the real one.

Describe your favorite type of hero.

Well when I was younger, it was definitely the prince on the white horse. Now, I like my men a little darker, much more edgy, and extremely alpha. All descriptors that describe my husband... beneath the sparkling tiara, I had a thing for those bad boys. To me sexy is when a man can be bad, but chooses not to be because he loves his woman, but who'll fight to protect what's his. Maybe I read too many bodice rippers growing up, who knows! *grin*

As silly as it sounds I was particularly intrigued by Hook at the beginning of the book. Do you plan on writing Hook’s story in the future?

I sure do. In fact, I've already introduced his heroine in book 2, Gerard's Beauty. She's a firecracker, but it'll work out in the end. It always does. ;) His book is slated to be the 5th and final book of the series. I'm kicking around a potential 6th book idea, but it's not set in stone yet. Right now, series is due to end at 5 with Hook's Pan. :)

I have personally always had a thing for werewolves, which is one reason why I am extremely excited for Red to come out, but I was wondering what your favorite supernatural creature is?

Mermaids! When I was five I asked my mom if she could make me one. Because of course I just assumed they really existed. LOL... Which is probably why I write, because in my world they do. Red and Her Wolf is slated to be released October 26th! Though at the rate I'm going, it could be ever sooner. I update my progress on my blog: www.mariehallwrites.blogspot.com pretty frequently, so if there will be a change that'll be the first place you'll see it!
