AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

1. How will you describe your book within a sentence?

· Snarky punk girl and her sidekick take on the supernatural--with a Native American twist.

2. Tell us about your favourite one among the characters of your own book? What special qualities make the particular character your favorite?

· Marshal (the sidekick). He's the best friend we all want: honest, faithful, and loves you in spite of your flaws. Plus, he's funny. :)

3. Your least favourite character from your book and why?

· Probably Bill from the third story (Dark Prelude). He's the biggest jerk I've ever created, and if I met the guy in real life I'd want to punch him almost immediately. LOL

4. If you get a chance of living the life of one of the characters of your book then which one would it be?

· Hmm, these stories get pretty "real" and there are so many monsters running around I'm not sure I'd want to be any of them! If I had to choose, I'd say Jenny (the leading lady). She's ultra-tough and has had a very difficult life. But suddenly she has this purpose--a very cool calling--and gets to explore the impossible and strange with her best friend at her side.

5. Genres you like to read? Genres you prefer to write?

· I love reading all types of speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, horror, etc.), and also enjoy writing those kinds of stories. But honestly, anything with some emotion, some action, and some humor are going to win me over.

6. When and how did the thought of this story come up?

· I did a lot of work with Native American cultures and groups during graduate school, so that's probably where that side of things came in. Then I wanted to write stories for the early "20 somethings" out there, about a girl who was flailing in life a bit and needed some direction. (That direction just happened to be hunting down monsters--not college or whatever.) The idea to make them into a novella series featuring her (like TV episodes) came a couple of years ago, and I set about creating the characters then. Blood Fugue (the first in the series) was published in the Fall of 2012.

7. How do you plan out your writing?

· I do some loose outlining generally. I know the ending and beginning (usually) and try to map out the small landmarks in between. Then I fill in the blanks with whatever I can come up with. :)

8. Tell us about your inspiration and how it motivated you to become a writer?

· My inspiration for writing fiction really spawned from the Harry Potter books. I've been a lifelong reader, but hadn't really thought about writing until that point. (I wrote grants and lots of academic stuff, so I'm not sure writing for "fun" was something that occurred to me. LOL) Those stories awakened the kid in me, and reacquainted me with my dreaming, creative side. So I wanted to try to do something similar for other people.

9. How do you feel now that you’re a published writer? Are you satisfied with your achievement?

· It's great! It's something I've been working toward for a long time, and there's nothing like hearing from random people that your stories mean something to them. Or even that they simply had a good time reading them. So I'm very satisfied... but would always love to find more readers, of course!

10. Do you prefer self-publishing or the traditional form of publishing?

· I really think doing both is the ideal at this point in time. There are things that work better self-published, and things that work better with traditional support. Furthermore, I've read so many great stories from both sides that I really hope there continues to be room for everyone. It's a great time to be a reader and a writer, that's for sure.

11. Describe yourself in 3 words.

· Determined. Witty. Friendly.

12. Any secret or fact about you that will surprise your readers and others as well?

· One of my nephews (loosely) inspired the character of Jenny Moonsong. They both love their video games and computers, and can be a little cantankerous at times. :)

13. Three most important things that an amateur writer must keep in mind while writing his first book.

· Patience. Patience. More patience. :D Seriously, a good story and good writing aren't necessarily the same thing. Work at both, and be prepared to work at both for a long time before you figure out the right blend of the two.

14. How do you spend your leisure time except for writing? Are you into sports?

· I play the guitar, watch and play sports (basketball is a favorite), play with my dogs, read, watch movies, and play video games as often as I can.

15. Your favourite vacation destination? Had it ever became the place where you based any of yours book? If yes, then which one?

· Italy! So beautiful... And the food! I haven't set a story there, but might someday. *wheels start turning*

16. Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not then what was your previous ambition and what made you change your decision and step in the field of writing?

· No, I didn't always want to be a writer. But I DID want to do something creative with my life. I've always loved drawing and painting. In fact, comic book artist would've been my number one ambition in life growing up. I just happen to be better at wielding words than a pencil. :)

17. Are you currently working on a project? If yes, would you like your readers to have a sneak peek into it?

· More Moonsongs stories are always "cooking" of course, but I'm also hard at work on a contemporary novel. It's about an ace college baseball pitcher who stinks at everything else in his life. It's about overcoming mental illness and learning to love yourself by loving others. Hope to have it out by early summer 2014.

18. Your top three favourite authors?

· Stephen King. J.K. Rowling. Neil Gaiman.

19. Your top three favourite books of all time?

· The Stand (by King). Night (by Elie Wiesel). Harry Potter (series by J.K.).

20. Any suggestions or advice for the upcoming writers on editing and publishing their books?

· Editing and creating a professionally polished product is THE most important step in writing. In fact, editing IS writing. It's when your idea becomes something everyone can enjoy and share in. And that's the goal with publishing (sharing). This is also an area you can't go alone. We're always the worst judge of our own writing, for better and worse, so get some help.

~About the Author~

Growing up in small-town Oklahoma, there were limits on the amount and types of entertainment at my disposal. Perhaps that’s why I set my imagination free. After collecting degrees in psychology and counseling, life brought me to Missouri, Texas, and Northern California—where I currently read, write, and live. I fill my spare time playing video games, watching movies, planning for the zombie apocalypse, reading graphic novels, and playing with my dogs.

My passion for New Adult literature led me to producing the weekly New Adult Lit Chat on Twitter, and contributing to the NA Alley Blog. I’m also the author of the Moonsongs Books, a series of New Adult, speculative-rural fantasy novelettes.
